Anycia is Atlanta’s next breakout star
Meet the ascending rapper with the unique, smoky voice and girl-next-door energy
Atlanta has been a hotbed for hip hop talent since Andre 3000 boldly proclaimed “the South got something to say” at the 1995 Source Awards. With the rich musical history of the city in the background, the current generation of Atlanta artists are carrying the torch and continuing to put on for their city.
Hip Hop is in a unique space at the moment. The genre is in the midst of a rap girl renaissance, with a new wave of women thriving and carving out niches for themselves all at the same time. In Atlanta alone, artists like Latto, Baby Tate, Asian Doll and Karrahhboo are all making names for themselves. One artist in particular is winning over the city and rapidly gaining fans across the country with her unique flow and captivating, girl-next-door energy: Anycia.
It’s been a whirlwind year for Anycia. Since dropping her unofficial breakout hit “So What” in early 2023, the momentum has continued to build for the Atlanta-born rapper. She’s received co-signs from superstars such as Drake, J. Cole, and Kevin Durant to name a few, catapulting her from buzzing local rapper to one of hip hop’s most promising new acts.
Her smoky voice and conversational, nonchalant delivery is a breath of fresh air in today’s sometimes overproduced musical landscape. Her casual confidence and around-the-way relatability make it easy for fans to gravitate towards her. A common thread throughout Anycia’s music is her authenticity. Her ability to stay effortlessly cool without straying too far away from herself has BET and others calling her Atlanta’s new “it girl.”
Her recent single “Back Outside” features fellow Atlanta star Latto. The accompanying music video is currently at over 1 million views on YouTube. There’s a natural chemistry between the two as they exchange bars over menacing 808s reminiscent of early aughts trap. Anycia’s smooth, matter-of-fact flow serves as the perfect foil to Latto’s bouncier, energetic delivery.
To the uninitiated, it may seem like Anycia magically burst onto the scene last year, but to those who have been paying close attention she’s been a familiar face in the Atlanta scene for years. She grew up around artists such as Playboi Carti and Key! and dabbled in music for years before fully taking it seriously from 2022 onward. Though she initially started off with a more melodic R&B sound, she realized the love songs she was making didn’t necessarily match her vibe. She found her stride when she pivoted to rap and has been on a winning streak ever since.
Anycia dropped her debut EP ‘Extra’ last November in partnership with UnitedMasters. Clocking in at a brisk 12 minutes, the six song appetizer serves as a delightful introduction into the world of Anycia. There’s a mesmerizing seductiveness to her music that immediately captures listeners’ attention, regardless of the lyrics. It’s not so much what she says, but how she’s saying it that’s key. Her versatility is also on display throughout the EP as she sounds just as comfortable over a Jersey club track like “Refund” as she does over a plugg banger like “Big Body.” The standout song from the project is the silky smooth “BRB,” which currently has over 2 million streams on Spotify.
After a breakout year in 2023, look out for Anycia to build on her momentum and have an even bigger 2024.
